How to change File Associations for Windows Media Player (or your player of choice) in Windows XP

If you wish to use another media player then Windows Media Player, follow these instructions and choose a different player in Step 3.

You can also choose different formats to play (associate) with different players. If you wish to associate a different file type (such as .MPG) with your media player, choose the file type in Step 1 and follow the remaining instructions.

1. From the Start button, Open Control Panel and click on Folder Options

You will see this screen if you click on File Types (note arrow)

Then scroll down until you see the extension WMV
your screen will show something other than Windows Media Player

Click once on WMV

2. With WMV highlighted the Change button is enabled as shown.

3. Click Change and Select Windows Media Player as shown

4. Click OK and you are done!.

Note: that if you are downloading Windows Media Player, you will have to option to associate WMV files with Windows Media Player after the install.
